Job Summary
The Anesthetist/Intensivist is responsible for providing safe and effective anesthesia care during surgical procedures and advanced clinical management of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The role includes perioperative assessment, pain management, emergency airway management, and multidisciplinary critical care leadership while ensuring evidence-based clinical practice and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
Anesthesia Services
- Conduct pre-anesthesia assessments, evaluate medical history, allergies, and risk factors.
- Determine and administer appropriate anesthesia techniques (general, regional, sedation).
- Monitor patients intraoperatively and manage anesthesia-related complications.
- Provide post-anesthesia care and monitor recovery.
- Perform emergency airway and resuscitation procedures as needed.
- Manage acute and chronic pain using pharmacologic and interventional techniques.
Critical Care Services
- Provide medical management of patients with life-threatening conditions in ICU.
- Lead resuscitation and stabilization of critically ill patients (ACLS/ATLS).
- Manage mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and vasoactive medications.
- Perform ICU procedures: central venous lines, arterial lines, chest tubes, intubation, lumbar puncture, etc.
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds and family counseling.
- Oversee infection prevention and critical care safety protocols.
Clinical Governance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to facility policies, clinical standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Document clinical care clearly and accurately in EMR.
- Participate in morbidity & mortality reviews, peer reviews, and clinical audits.
- Maintain Continuous Medical Education (CME) and professional licensure.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with surgeons, physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied health teams.
- Provide clinical guidance to junior doctors and ICU staff.
- Support disaster preparedness and emergency response programs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Specialist qualification in Anesthesiology and/or Critical Care (MD/DNB/FRCA/FICM or equivalent).
- Valid NHRA professional license
- Minimum
3–5 years post-qualification experience
in anesthesia and/or intensive care. - Experience managing complex surgical and ICU cases preferred.
- BLS & ACLS certification required; ATLS or PALS is an advantage.
