  • Experience:
    • Five - Ten (5-10) years progressive professional experience on fire trucks, firefighting apparatus or heavy transport vehicles, within a large city fire department, must have progressed to EVT LV II.
  • Skills:
    • Emergency vehicle technician LV II must have the technological and electrical skills to diagnose, repair and maintain the specialized equipment used on firefighting apparatus.
    • Mastered state of the art techniques, practices, procedures, test equipment and documentation used in all facets of maintenance performed on automotive, truck, first responder vehicles, and all other forms of vehicular equipment.
    • Mastered various mechanical principles as applied to power transmission and braking systems, engine electrical systems and hydraulics.
    • Mastered NFPA 1901 standard for automotive fire apparatus and NFPA 1911 standard for the inspection, maintenance and testing of automotive fire apparatus.
    • Mastered fault determination through systematic troubleshooting of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
    • Must be able to set the standard for professional excellence among the EVT team.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, dry, duty, desert environment with average temperatures of 30 degrees in the winter and 130 degrees in the summer months). Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices. Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.

We have created a role for a Technical Manager, Automotive and Industrial with a passion for open source and precision engineering. Our goal is to enable industries such as automotive to leverage our open source portfolio. Your role will include the ability to grow, lead a team of dedicated engineers aiming at adapting our products to automotive and industrial specific requirements. You will represent Canonical and Ubuntu in the industrial and automotive community and standards consortia. You and your team will make sure our Linux distribution and products, as well as ways of working, are supporting standards addressing processes, cyber-security and safety concerns such as described by (but not limited to) IEC 61508, ISO9001 and Automotive specific ISO 21434 UNECE R155 & R156, ISO26262 ASIL (from B to D) or ASPICE. At the same time, we aim at enhancing the delivery quality, security and developer experience where you will be expected to lead, challenge, and positively influence the culture and work with your team on strategy and execution. You will report directly to our Vice President of Engineering Excellence and work closely with the Automotive Product Manager to define and execute a vision and roadmap for automotive at Canonical.

Location: This is a Globally remote role

What you'll do

  • Work with Product Management to refine the vision and strategy for automotive at Canonical
  • Define and execute an engineering roadmap for the automotive team at Canonical
  • Represent Ubuntu and Canonical in the automotive community, in front of customers, partners and consortia
  • Lead our Linux distribution and open source software strategy in Automotive
  • Build and lead a globally distributed team of engineers and coordinate, guide and oversee their work
  • Develop skills through coaching, feedback and hands-on technical leadership
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
  • Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices
  • Help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company values
  • Work from home with international travel twice a year, up to two weeks at a time, for company events

Who you are

  • You have a strong software engineering, Linux, and open source background
  • You have in-depth knowledge in Linux packages and embedded development
  • You have knowledge of automotive and industry standards such as ISO21434, ISO26262, SOTIF, IEC 61508, and ideally have led product development initiatives that fulfilled compliance with one or more of the mentioned standards
  • You have experience in C/C++ and Python programming
  • You have practical experience in automotive, including functional safety, embedded systems, cloud and related software trends
  • You have experience leading, managing, coaching and mentoring software developers
  • You have a track record of timely delivery and high quality software
  • You love developing and growing people and have a track record of doing it
  • You have experience working in an agile development environment

To undertake general vehicle maintenance and routine repairs on the bus fleet, ensuring that all work is carried out in line with the agreed process and to a high standard, and that safety is observed at all times.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Diagnose defects and effect repairs to engine, gearbox, chassis, axles, steering, and brakes.
  2. Fault diagnosis using specialist equipment relevant to vehicles.
  3. Repair vehicles to Company and Statutory standards.
  4. Identify and repair defects with various vehicle types.
  5. Prepare vehicles for annual testing and passing.
  6. Carry out lubrication of all vehicles in accordance with company and manufacturer guidelines.
  7. Service vehicles according to company and vehicle manufacturing specifications, complying with company and statutory standards.
  8. Maintain documentation as per documented quality procedures.
  9. Demonstrate flexibility in line with operational requirements.
  10. Maintain good housekeeping and conform to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Requirements
  1. Secondary and further education with academic or vocational qualifications and relevant technical and diagnostic experience.
  2. Excellent understanding of the road passenger transport sector, including relevant legal and external regulations for passenger vehicle operation.
  3. Flexible approach to working hours, including attending out-of-hours and responding to 'on-call' requirements.
  4. Assertive and diplomatic communication skills.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills to deal effectively with people and issues.
