Software Engineer - Data Infrastructure - OpenSearch/ElasticSearch

Canonical is building a comprehensive automation suite to provide multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. The data platform team develops a full range of data stores and data technologies, spanning from big data, through NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, and analytics to structured SQL engines. The OpenSearch team focuses on creating the best enterprise automation solution for search and analytics suites like OpenSearch and Elasticsearch.

Location: This is a globally remote role

The OpenSearch team is responsible for the automation of OpenSearch operations, including fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, and more. This role focuses on the creation and automation of features of data platforms, not on analysing the data in them. You will collaborate with an internationally distributed team to write high-quality Python code to create new features, debug issues, and interact with upstream communities publicly.

• Experience operating and managing search and analytics engines like Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, and OpenSearch
• Experience with Linux systems administration, package management, and operations
• Experience with the public cloud or a private cloud solution like OpenStack
• Experience with operating Kubernetes clusters

• A Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience in energy systems engineering, with a strong specialization in energy storage technologies (BESS, flywheels, etc.).
• Deep understanding of battery chemistries, power electronics, grid integration, and control systems for energy storage.
• Proven experience in designing, sizing, and deploying utility-scale or commercial/industrial energy storage projects.
• Expertise in energy modeling software (e.g., PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, MATLAB/Simulink) and BESS simulation tools.
• Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards and safety regulations.
• Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and work effectively in a fully remote environment.

We are hiring a Software Engineer for Ceph & Distributed Storage. As part of Cloud Engineering, you'll be building modelling software to drive systems such as OpenStack, Ceph, and Kubernetes with a focus on distributed storage and Ceph. You'll be engineering solutions to scale in production, working with our field teams to ensure we're meeting the needs of customers looking to adopt cutting-edge technology.

What your day will look like

• Write high quality, rigorously designed Python and Golang software
• Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team
• Debug issues and produce high quality code to fix them
• Contribute to technical documentation that define best practices for authoring high quality operators
• Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions

• You have a Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
• You have experience with writing modern, maintainable Python
• You have experience with Ceph storage
• You love technology and working with brilliant people

• You have interest and experience with two or more of the following: Linux, Kubernetes, Public cloud, OpenStack, LXC/LXD, Python, Go, Debian packaging
